Let’s keep the pressure on our suppliers!
You might remember that back in May, I offered up a way to take action against the overuse of plastics coming from our suppliers.
Need a refresher? It was a post with a suggestion of how to voice your concerns about plastic waste in the jewelry industry.
What else can we do to end plastic use?
Behind the scenes, fellow jeweler and anti-plastic activist Alexis Pavlantos and I have been working on a petition and a social media strategy to spread the word.
Here is the plan:
-
Sign this petition. Then share with your jewelry industry friends. You can let them know that adding their email address to the form DOES NOT add them to any newsletter list.
-
I may need to use their email in case I have follow-up questions, but that will be a private and personal email.
-
-
In the petition form, there is also the option of uploading a photo of your own plastic waste. Do you have a pile of baggies that you haven’t gotten through? Do you collect and reuse all that plastic? If so, upload a photo of how much plastic you receive from all of your accounts!
-
If you have an Instagram handle, and thoughts about all of this waste (keep it brief since these may get turned into captions), fill out those fields too!
-
We will be posting and reposting your photos, with credit to you of course, to Instagram once we have enough submissions.
-
We would love your signature and submissions by the end of July so that we can start sending and posting in Late July and early August.
What is the result we want to see?
I mean, an end to plastic baggies and vacuum-sealed plastic that are not reusable or recyclable is my end goal.
We can start by asking for a reduction, but considering how much plastic is choking us, time is short to make a big change.
A shift to compostable, paper, or other plastic alternatives is the end goal.
Will this work?
I think it will. If enough of us are on board, we become a force that can’t be ignored.
