Planning for your jewelry business

My secret is that as much as I see myself as a creative, I adore logistics, especially in business.

Seriously.

Watching Station Eleven* (one of my favorite shows from the past 5 years, and a great book too!) the character Miranda is asked how she defines logistics and she says “The path things take”, but her boss corrects her – “Not the path. The RIGHT path”

I love this. Mostly because what counts as the “right path” depends on the specifics of your jewelry business. What is “right” for one entrepreneur is utterly wrong for another. And often, you don’t know what your right path is until you try or get the help you need to sort out the right answers for you.

What does the right path look like for you in your small business and how do you get on it?

It starts by stepping back and looking at your big goals. This is the “where do you see yourself in 5 years” question that most of us dread. It’s a question that I ask of my clients in my small business advising too. And it’s a good question to flip around. Try this instead:

  • What does an ideal life look like to you?

  • How can your business support that life?

  • How much money do you need to get there?

  • What’s one thing you could do today that would put you a step closer to your business goals?

Having a vision is the first step, how you get there, well, that’s all about the path, and more importantly, the right path FOR YOU.

How can you run your small business differently?

For one, you can understand that what is important to you, may not be important to other business owners.. When I had my own production jewelry line, I was very concerned about sourcing responsibly, and that came through in all of my marketing materials, my questions asked of my suppliers and my branding. This was always more important to me and what I wanted to highlight and I always looked to learn more. It also meant that I would turn to people who were more expert than I was.**

Seeking out those experts helped my business establish it’s roots in ways that possibly wouldn’t appeal to other designers. And most importantly, it allowed me to do business in a way that stayed true to my values.

What does your jewelry business success mean to you?

This is the question I ask of almost all of my clients. Success has different definitions. Some jewelry designers want financial success and use marketing and PR as the means to achieve this. Others define success through artistic recognition. Others define business success as a feeling of liberation. Your definition of success is the driving factor in setting your jewelry business goals.
