How do I read Analog or Vernier Calipers – Tool Talk!

How to read calipers without a digital readout

I love modern tools, Really I do. Being able to use digital tools of any kind to produce a more accurate and exact result is amazing. That said, I always felt frustrated by the digital readout on my calipers.

I had an older pair – one where the battery started going out constantly. Replacing the battery didn’t seem to help, and now I was stuck with a tool that might need to be thrown out. Ugh. I hate waste.

The solution for me was to switch to the analog, or Vernier, calipers. It took some getting used to, but once I learned how to read them, and practiced over and over, it became like second nature. Now I have a set of calipers that I could have for the next 40 or 50 years of use.

Calipers are such an essential tool – great for measuring diamonds and gemstones, wire or sheet, or measuring the length of a ring blank.

You can get digital readout calipers, but sometimes batteries run out, or you inherit older tools that don’t have that feature. This video will help you learn how to read calipers with ease – a great skill for flush setting or pave setting.
