And now for the most controversial Tool Talk that I’ll ever do :
What kind of jeweler’s torch should you get?
I know, I know. This is one of those jeweler subjects that gets super judgmental super fast. Everyone has OPINIONS and there is this gatekeeping nature to the discussion that suggests that you aren’t a real jeweler unless you have the “right torch”.
If you spend any time in online jeweler forums, you have probably seen these discussions play out. I went through this phase for a bit and cringe at how I used to judge other metalsmiths for their torch choices.
This is a no judgement zone
What’s great about going from “I judge you for your torch” to “each person should get the right torch (or torches, in my case) for them” is the chance to explore different models and learn what each one has to offer.
The sum of what I have learned is that you should get the torch that best suits you. Tune in to this video and know in advance that while I have strong preferences for certain torches, I won’t judge you for yours 🙂
Here’s a short summary of which torch to get
-
For small and delicate jewelry – The Little torch with either oxy/propane or oxy/acetylene
-
For large and sculptural work – Hoke torch
-
For jewelry and other medium-sized work – Meco Torch
-
For jewelry soldering beginners who are reluctant to have tanks in their homes – a butane torch
Also, the key answer to the question “Which torch should you get?”.
Answer “It depends”. Other Answer: “The one you like the best”
You probably have opinions about this too. What is your favorite torch? Drop it in the comments below and remember to keep it non-judgmental!
