Why is my white gold ring giving me a rash?

Why do I get a red, bumpy rash from wearing my white gold ring?

If your white gold ring was made in the USA, then it very likely contains nickel. Nickel is the metal most likely to cause allergic reactions.

But my white gold ring didn’t used to give me a rash, so why now after 2 years?

Because a lot of commercially made white gold jewelry gets plated with rhodium. After a certain amount of time, the rhodium wears off and now the nickel white gold is touching your skin.

What can I do about this?

  1. Take it back to the place you bought it from and ask to have it replated.

  2. Have it remade in either palladium white gold or platinum.

  3. If your original jeweler won’t re-plate it, take it to a different jeweler.

What if I can’t have it remade right now?

Put it on a chain to wear it, paint the inside with nail polish (you will need to redo this every so often), sell it to have some money to put towards a new ring, but continuing to wear it will cause your rash to get worse.
